Prior to performing “Perfecta” and nabbing the Billboard Latin Song of the Decade award for “Despacito” at the 2020 Billboard Latin Music Awards on Wednesday night, Luis Fonsi opened up about the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
“We’ve become a divided country and I don’t like it. I think it’s time to raise our voice,” he told Billboard on the red carpet. “My message, especially to Latinos, is go out and vote for who you want to vote for. I think now, more than ever, our voice is so important and to celebrate each other and come together and to figure it out with respect.”
Fonsi’s message comes a month after he showed up to a Hispanic Heritage Month event in Florida in support of Joe Biden, where he introduced Biden to the crowd and the former vice president paid him back by using “Despacitio” as his entrance song.
For Fonsi, “Despacito,” which he released in 2017 in collaboration with Daddy Yankee and recently surpassed 7 billion views on YouTube, is the gift that keeps on giving.
“It’s a blessing and I don’t take anything for granted,” he said. “We’re almost four years in and I still celebrate it and pinch myself and I still thank everyone involved.”
