Morgan Wallen’s ‘Dangerous’ Makes It Three Weeks at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart

Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album stays put at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for a third straight week, becoming the first country album to spend three weeks atop the list in eight years. The set earned 130,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Jan. 28 (down 18%), according to MRC Data.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Feb. 6, 2021-dated chart (where Dangerous holds at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard’s website on Feb. 2. Of Dangerous’ 130,000 equivalent album units earned in the tracking week ending Jan. 28, SEA units comprise 115,000 (down 14%, equaling 154.13 million on-demand streams of the album’s 30 songs), album sales comprise 12,000 (down 44%) and TEA units comprise 3,000 (down 22%).

Dangerous is just the second album in the last 12 months to notch three weeks of at least 125,000 units earned. It follows Taylor Swift’s Folklore, which debuted with 846,000 units (Aug. 8, 2020, chart) and then tallied 135,000 and 136,000 in its second and third weeks.

Speaking of Swift, with Dangerous holding at No. 1 for a third week on the Billboard 200, a country album holds court for a third straight week. The last album to score three weeks at No. 1, that also appeared on the Top Country Albums chart, was Taylor Swift’s Red, which tallied seven nonconsecutive weeks in the pole position between the charts dated Nov. 10, 2012, and Jan. 12, 2013. Red also spent its first three weeks at No. 1 (Nov. 10-24, 2012).

The last album by a male artist to log three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and its first three weeks at No. 1 — and also appear on Top Country Albums — was Elvis Presley’s Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits, which clocked a total of three weeks in the lead on the Billboard 200 (Oct. 12, 2002 — its debut week — and then Oct. 19 and 26).

The last album of new material by a male artist to spend three weeks at No. 1, and also appear on Top Country Albums, was Alan Jackson’s Drive in 2002, with a total of four weeks in the lead. It spent its first three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (Feb. 2-16) and then notched one more week at No. 1 on the March 2 list.

Three former No. 1s trail Dangerous (released via Big Loud/Republic Records) on the new Billboard 200, as Pop Smoke’s Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon (Victor Victor Worldwide/Republic) is steady at No. 2 (45,000 equivalent album units earned; down 4%), Swift’s Evermore (Republic) rises 4-3 (35,000; down 15%) and The Weeknd’s After Hours (XO/Republic) climbs 8-4 (nearly 35,000; up 6%).

Republic Records is the distributing label for all four albums — the first time since 1996 that one label has monopolized Nos. 1-4 on the Billboard 200. On the Dec. 7, 1996, chart, Interscope held the top four with Bush’s Razorblade Suitcase (Trauma/Interscope), Snoop Doggy Dogg’s Tha Doggfather (Death Row/Interscope), No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom (Trauma/Interscope) and Makaveli’s The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory (Death Row/Interscope).

Back on the new Billboard 200, Lil Durk’s The Voice rises 6-5 with 32,000 equivalent album units earned (down 13%), while Juice WRLD’s former No. 1 Legends Never Die bumps 9-6 (just over 31,000; down 2%) and Ariana Grande’s previous leader Positions falls 5-7 (31,000; down 22%). Universal Music Group (UMG) distributes the top seven albums — the first time a company has held Nos. 1-7 since UMG last did it on the Nov. 17, 2018-dated chart.

Two more former No. 1s are up next, as Luke CombsWhat You See Is What You Get rises 10-8 (30,000 equivalent album units earned; down 4%) and Lil Baby’s My Turn ascends 11-9 (30,000; up less than 1%).

Closing out the new top 10 is arrival of Anuel AA and Ozuna’s collaborative album Los Dioses, which debuts at No. 10 with 29,000 equivalent album units earned. Of Los Dioses’ 29,000 equivalent album units earned, SEA units comprise 23,000 (equaling 34.44 million on-demand streams of the album’s songs), album sales comprise 6,000 and TEA units comprise a negligible number.

Los Dioses is the second top 10 for both acts. Anuel AA nabbed his first top 10 visit with Emmanuel (No. 8 on June 13, 2020) and Ozuna reached the region with Aura (No. 7; Sept. 18, 2018).

Jessica Biel Wishes Justin Timberlake a Happy 40th Birthday: ‘I Honor You Today, Baby’

Justin Timberlake is celebrating his 40th birthday with a sweet message from his wife and a massive plate of birthday pancakes.

Jessica Biel, who’s married to Timberlake, posted a tribute to her husband on Instagram on Sunday (Jan. 31) and a slideshow of personal photos of the couple — including one of him in a crown, smiling at the camera with the impressive stack of pancakes.

“There’s no one I have more fun with, have more laughs with, feel more deeply for, and have more history with. I honor you today, baby. And wish you the most creative and fulfilling year to date. Happy 40th, my love,” she wrote.

Timberlake and Biel have been married since 2012. They’re parents to two children, 5-year-old Silas and baby Phineas.

The pair confirmed the birth of Phineas in January during Timberlake’s appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “He’s awesome and so cute. Nobody’s sleeping,” Timberlake said. “But we’re thrilled. We’re thrilled and couldn’t be happier. Very grateful.”

Fans Choose Selena Gomez & Rauw Alejandro’s ‘Baila Conmigo’ as This Week’s Favorite New Music

Selena Gomez’s latest Spanish-language single “Baila Conmigo,” in collaboration with Rauw Alejandro, has topped this week’s new music poll.

Music fans voted in a poll published Friday (Jan. 29) on Billboard, choosing the pair’s sultry reggaeton song as their favorite new music release of the past week.

“Baila Conmigo” brought in nearly 78% of the vote, beating out new music by Weezer (OK Human), Maluma (#7DJ), Eric Church (“Heart on Fire”), Lil Durk featuring Lil Baby (“Finesse Out the Gang Way”), and others.

The Tainy-produced track, which translates to “Dance With Me,” arrived two weeks after “De Una Vez,” a rhythmic pop song about healing and self-worth. It marked the singer’s first Spanish single in more than a decade.

Both songs will appear on Gomez’s all-Spanish EP, Revelación, which is scheduled for release on March 12.

Placing second on the past week’s tally with 9% of the vote was the “other” category, followed by Weezer’s latest album, OK Human, in third with almost 5% of the vote.

“OK Human was made at a time when humans-playing-instruments was a thing of the past,” the rock band tweeted in mid-January when announcing its 14th album. “All we could do is look back on ancient times when humans really mattered and when the dark tech-takeover fantasy didn’t exist.”

The thread continued, “We used our instruments to connect to the 1960’s and 1970’s and, with the orchestra, back to the 18th and 19th centuries. We had no click track or loops or hi-tech sounds. Not even an electric guitar.”

Dave Grohl Recalls Being ‘Beaten by Police and Rednecks’ at Anti-Reagan Concerts

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl hasn’t been shy about his political leanings. He frequently criticized Donald Trump, including in his June 2018 British GQ cover story, in which he said he was “ashamed of our president” and called the reality TV personality a “massive jerk.”

Grohl, 52, shared in a new interview with The Independent that he’s been making his political stances clear since he was a kid. He told the U.K. publication that back in the ’80s, he attended “Rock Against Reagan” shows in Washington, D.C., “right on the Mall, in front of the Lincoln Memorial, a quarter of a mile from where I would one day be invited to play at Obama’s first big ‘party’ on the South Lawn.”

“There were police on horses with f—ing batons. It was nuts,” recalled Grohl, whose dad was a supporter of the 40th president, of the anti-Ronald Reagan punk show that featured the likes of Dead Kennedys and Bad Brains. “I’d get beaten by police and rednecks. But it was the right place and the right time for that, under Reagan’s suffocating conservative administration.”

Nowadays, when he and the Foo Fighters aren’t busy performing for Democratic presidents (the band played their hit “Times Like These” during the Biden-Harris inauguration special “Celebrating America” on Jan. 20) they’re preparing to release their latest album, Medicine at Midnight, in the midst of a global pandemic.

Grohl revealed in the interview that the band was initially told releasing their 10th studio album while the coronavirus has much of the world shut down wasn’t the greatest idea. But an unexpected experience convinced him otherwise — his drum-off with 10-year-old Nandi Bushell.

“When the videos went viral, I realized that the only purpose of the band is to bring joy. That’s it. Right?” Grohl shared. “The battle with Nandi brought happiness and release to the millions who watched it at a time when happiness was in short supply. Watching this great kid kick my a– lifted hearts from the f—ing doom for 3-4 minutes. I knew we had to put the album out.”

And so, with the drum battle with the young music prodigy under his belt, Grohl and the Foo Fighters announced in early December that their new album was coming.

Neil Young Reveals Previously Unreleased 1982 Album Is ‘Coming to You Soon’

Neil Young has more new music on the way.

The legendary Canadian rocker, who has released massive amounts of previously unheard music over the past year, shared news of yet another long-lost album that will soon see the light of day. Young took to his website on Sunday (Jan. 31) to announce details about a forthcoming album, titled Johnny’s Island, which was recorded in 1982 at Commercial Recorders in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The singer-songwriter describes the upcoming set as a “complete album,” featuring unreleased tracks like “Big Pearl,” “Island in the Sun” and “Love Hotel,” along with “others you may have heard before.”

“It’s a beautiful record coming to you soon,” Young wrote in the announcement.

Johnny’s Island — which is “being prepared for release” on Neil Young Archives — was recorded shortly after his 1982 album, Trans. A specific release date was not provided.

A representative for Young tells Billboard that “due to demand from fans, we do have a very aggressive release schedule from Neil this year.” Further details about Johnny’s Island were not available.

Earlier this month, Young also announced plans to release a new live album and concert film, Way Down in the Rust Bucket, on Feb. 26 through Reprise Records. The 19-track release documents a 1990 concert with Crazy Horse in Santa Cruz, Calif., and features performances from his album of that year, Ragged Glory.

Young recently made a deal to sell 50% of his music catalog to Hipgnosis Songs. The deal, which could have catalog valued up to $105 million, arrives after decades of Young’s refusal to license his music for use in commercials. The nearly 1,200-song catalog spans five decades of Young’s solo recordings and music with Buffalo Springfield; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; and Crazy Horse.

When BLACKPINK previewed their livestream concert The Show with James Corden ahead of the virtual event, the show-stopping rendition of “Pretty Savage” offered only a peek of all the special moments that would be wrapped into the K-pop phenom’s long-awaited live production.

While members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa brought their superstar sensibilities to some of their biggest hits such as “How You Like That” and “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du,” The Show — which streamed at midnight ET on Jan. 31 — also put on full display how BLACKPINK is pushing themselves as ever-evolving entertainers offering new twists and unexpected elements to the stage. Plus, fans got to see the women enjoy themselves in a way that’s not so easily seen during music videos or televised performances.

While there were dozens of dazzling moments, here are the 10 biggest standout moments from BLACKPINK’s The Show livestream concert.

1. The Live Band Opening With “Kill This Love” 

One of the best parts about BLACKPINK’s In Your Area tour from 2019 was hearing the group reinterpret their smashes with a full, live band accompanying them. Even with COVID-19 restrictions and moving to an online concert, the group was able to bring in their backing band members to not only serve their Hot 100 hit “Kill This Love” with all the style, vocals, raps and choreography fans expect, but as well as a refreshing musical rework thanks to their drummer, bassist, guitarist and keyboardist.

2. Jisoo Taking Tove Lo’s Track on an Emotional Journey

Fans knew to expect some special solo stages from the individual members, and Jisoo full-on delivered by not only offering an emotional cover of Tove Lo’s “Habits (Stay High),” but reworking the track with new Korean lyrics — just like she did during the 2019 tour with Zedd’s “Clarity.” It was a treat not only for her international fans, but to see the starlet bring her vocals to a familiar hit while carrying it out in a way that’s most comfortable for her.

3. Lisa Does Doja Cat With Disco, Dancing and Rapping

The group’s youngest member also brought out a new take on a major pop hit. The Thai singer took Doja Cat’s No. 1 Hot 100 hit “Say So” and added her own set of new rap lyrics as well as brought out a full-fledged dance break. While Lisa handled a dance cover in 2019 (with her “Swalla” performance that seemingly went viral every night), this cover let Lisa showcase her vocals, rap style and dance skills.

4. “Sour Candy” Comes to the Stage

BLACKPINK and Lady Gaga’s Chromatica collaboration “Sour Candy” is an undeniable fan-favorite track for both fandoms, and the girls brought it to the stage for The Show. While Gaga wasn’t with them, the deep-house/dance-pop tune thrived with elements of voguing incorporated into the stage choreography.

5. The Album’s Acoustic B-Side Section

The Show allowed BLACKPINK to finally bring the multiple cuts from 2020’s The Album that hadn’t yet gotten the live-stage treatment. A standout moment came when the quartet slowed things down for a moment to perform their most acoustic-leaning B-sides “Love to Hate Me” and “You’ll Never Know,” two of the most emotional songs in their repertoire. Not only did the two tracks give fans a chance to see the members in a new light (no backup dancers or fancy stage lighting, just the ladies singing in chairs), but offered the group a chance to focus on their strong vocals. (Jisoo particularly wowed throughout this section).

6. Jennie Slays a New “Solo” 

As the first member to release her own music in 2018, Jennie’s single “Solo” has been a staple in the group’s setlist. But the singer-rapper also served a surprise for fans when she performed her empowerment anthem with a refreshed concept and a whole set of new rap lyrics. She not only took some time to flex in the new section (“W, no L’s / covered W and Elle“) as well as give a shoutout to her favorite brands such as Chanel and even the Blinks, the name for BLACKPINK’s fans.

7. Rosé Previews Her Solo Music

Fans have been eagerly awaiting vocal powerhouse Rosé to deliver her anticipated solo music for years, and The Show finally previewed a bit of what they can expect. Not only did fans see a clip of a music video to new song “Gone” — which seems to be a song fully in English and was reported to be a B-side on her forthcoming record — but got a live snippet as well. Rosé fully embodied the emotional, acoustic-leaning cut, revealing vulnerable lyrics including “I feel used/ How I’m supposed to live without you? I refuse.”

8. Bringing Out All the Elements for “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du”

While it’s unfortunate the global pandemic  means BLACKPINK can’t showcase their songs with in-person concerts, the performance of “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” brought something that likely wouldn’t be possible to take on road. Not only did the quartet decorate their stage with a display of fire and pyrotechnics, but the set itself was transformed into a shallow pool for the girls and their troupe of backup dancers to stomp throughout the track. The fire and water elements shine, but they brought out some of their most intricate choreography of the entire show — perhaps best seen when Rosé sang a verse fully horizontal while three muscular dancers maneuvered and moved her, carefully holding the star above their heads.

9. The Playful Performance of “As If It’s Your Last”

2017 single “As If It’s Your Last” is a favorite among Blinks, but The Show may have also revealed it to be one of BLACKPINK’s as well. Viewers saw the girls having loads of fun, best illustrated when Jennie and Lisa face one another during the chorus, and the former cracked a face to make the youngest member laugh mid song. Lisa would later transfer the silliness over to Jisoo with a playful spank during another chorus section, causing the group’s eldest to bust a huge smile as well.

10. The Compliment Session

The Show offered a few moments for the women to talk with their fans for a bit, but the best chat session may have come ahead of the finale when the girls were showing their love for one another. Jennie began by talking about Rosé’s solo performance of “Gone,” sharing that she was surprised by the new video as well, while Lisa gave her props about her preparation process saying, “It was really cool, you barely slept.”

Rosé flipped things over to Jennie and commented that her “Solo” stage was “cray-zy” as the girls hyped up “Rapper Jennie” and her new verses. The group also showed love to their fans who tuned in, as well as the instrumentalists, dancers and staff members who made The Show happen.

Before closing with the track “Forever Young” that featured fan-made signs and messages, there was a palpable sense of gratitude and admiration from BLACKPINK, which added a special, human element after these superstars powered through the performance.

System of a Down Share Powerful ‘Genocidal Humanoidz’ Video During Charity Livestream: Watch

System of a Down has shared a powerful new music video in an effort to raise money for Armenian soldiers wounded during the country’s recent conflict with Azerbaijan.

On Saturday (Jan. 30), the Armenian-American rockers premiered the official video for “Genocidal Humanoidz” — one of two new songs released last November in response to a war over the region known as Nagorno-Karabakh — during a livestream fundraising event on the band’s official YouTube channel.

Co-directed by SOAD bassist Shavo Odadjian and Deep Sky Animation’s Adam Mason, the video features a blend of an intense live performance with black-and-white animation of a young boy navigating his war-torn homeland while fighting demons who have invaded.

SOAD’s livestream raised nearly $257,000, with proceeds going toward the rehabilitation of Armenian soldiers and volunteers in need of prosthetic limbs as a result of the conflict. Funds will also help provide laser therapy for those burned by chemical weapons.

Last year’s reignited conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan provoked SOAD to raise their voices in support of their homeland by simultaneously dropping “Genocidal Humanoidz” and “Protect the Land,” the group’s first new music in 15 years. The charity tracks have already raised more than $600,000 for the Armenia Fund.
